May 19th - Messina Strait

Today was a sea day. Early in the morning we passed the Island of Stromboli which is formed from a single volcanic cone which is still active. Around midday we passed through the Messina Strait which is only a 1/2 mile wide and seperates Sicily from Italy. We were upgraded to a fabulous balcony cabin and have enjoyed the views and photo opportunities. There is a ship in port in Sicily that seems to dwarf the city. The large tower is part of an electric system that had wires strung over the straight between Italy and Sicily from the 1950's into the 1980's.
